“…Simply too much confusion…”

Publisher’s Weekly has been playing close attention to the Google Book Settlement, as it promises to radically impact that industry.

Last month, they conducted a survey of readers to get their opinions on the proposed settlement.

PW’s takeaway? In their own words…

“…there is simply too much confusion and too little support for anyone to feel comfortable. For us, the survey highlights a fundamental question: for all the good and bad scenarios raised by the deal, was it ever reasonable to think that such a revolutionary, unprecedented pact, negotiated in secret over three years by people with loose claims of representation, concerning a wide range of stakeholders, both foreign and domestic, involving murky issues of copyright and the rapidly unfolding digital future, could be pushed through as a class action settlement within a period of months, in the teeth of a historic media industry transition?”

    The Publishers Weekly survey is a very unscientific indication of actual attitudes and intentions about the Settlement.
    What everyone needs to know ASAP is actual opt out figures. Opt outs presumably have been e filing and by mail with the Settlement Administrator
    Rust Consulting in Minneapolis. Can’t anyone get current opt out numbers released before the Oct.7th fairness hearing??

    Too much confusion?? Uh, the confusion is in the fact that the OBA is pissed off that THEY didn’t do what Google is doing first! It’s funny that the people who are miffed at Google are the one’s that have a competing interest. Hmm, Microsoft, with ALL it’s issues with Google. Amazon, with it’s overpriced reader, overpriced books and it’s NAZI way of controlling what is and isn’t on THEIR reader.

    It’s all about the money…….

    Actually, delete my above comment if I have to wait for it to be moderated. If it was all about “the OBA is awesome”, it will get published. If comments state something disparaging about the OBA, they won’t be shown.

    I hope Google kicks the living hell out of this MONOPOLY that is the OBA!!
